Oklahoma softball is doing it … again.
The team’s win streak amid the Women’s College World Series has been extended to 51 following a 4-2 win over Stanford on Monday, returning from an early 2-0 lead by the Cardinal.
The Sooner haven’t lost a game since Feb. 19. (!!!) The wins also extend the NCAA Division-1 record. It initially was broken by the team on May 27 in the 8-7 win against Clemson.
The Arizona Wildcats won 47 straight games across the 1996-97 seasons.
So how did the Sooners do it?
One of the main factors is their offense.
Heading into Monday’s game, the Sooners averaged 8.29 hits per game, leading the nation. The team also had five of the top batting averages in the league in Tiare Jennings, Jayda Coleman, Alyssa Brito, and Kinzie Hansen.
Jennings, who celebrated her birthday on Monday, said the entirety of the lineup could hit. It takes the pressure off, she added.
“It allows us to make adjustments quicker, it allows us to be free-minded and joyful in everything that we do because arm-in-arm, one through 20, this team’s tough to beat,” Jennings told The Oklahoman on Saturday.
They also have a fun way of holding on to home run balls. After a player hits one, the ushers retrieve them and deliver the balls to their families.
That’s a lot of souvenirs.
The defensive game is just as strong, with the Oklahoma softball team having yet to tally an error during the WCWS.
