The last team the committee chose to make the field of 68 was Tulsa, and that went down to the final hour of conference tournament play on Sunday. Had Memphis beaten UConn in the AAC Championship, Tulsa would’ve been out, according to committee chair Joe Castiglione (via ESPN):
Tulsa was the last team put in the NCAA tournament field of 68 and would have been bumped out by fellow American Athletic Conference member Memphis had the Tigers beaten UConn earlier Sunday in the AAC tournament title game in Orlando, according to NCAA tournament selection committee chair Joe Castiglione.
Had that occurred then VCU would have been in the First Four in Dayton and Memphis as the automatic qualifier into the general field. VCU was a No. 10 seed in the West and will open against Oregon State.
Castiglione said Tulsa got in over its competition because of four top 50 wins.
Following Tulsa as the final teams to make the field of 68 were Wichita State, Michigan, and Vanderbilt.
Castiglione said that the first four teams out were St. Bonaventure, Monmouth, South Carolina, and San Diego State.
