The Georgia Bulldogs are in the midst of a terrible college basketball season. With a 6-21 overall record and 1-13 record in SEC play, the program is at the bottom of the SEC and things are looking pretty grim.
It wasn’t too surprising then when reports came out that head coach Tom Crean’s job could be in jeopardy. However, the situation surrounding that development was a bit concerning.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, assistant coach Wade Mason got into a physical altercation with the director of player personnel, Brian Fish, during halftime of Georgia’s 85-64 loss at LSU last Wednesday. Mason was suspended indefinitely for the incident. according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Graham Coffey of SB Nation’s Dawg Sports then reported that Crean’s firing “could be imminent” because he failed to report the physical altercation. The notion was that Georgia was looking to fire Crean for cause as to avoid paying his $3.6 million buyout. However, Crean remained on as head coach in the days that followed.
As for Mason, the school has decided to part ways with him, per a report from DawgNation. According to the report, the school and Mason are currently working out the details that will end his two-year contract a season early. There is “no chance” that Mason will return to the team next season.
Mason was an assistant with Stephen F. Austin for five years before joining Georgia’s staff. It remains to be seen if Crean will fill that spot this season or wait until the offseason to do so.
