The Florida State Seminoles took down the No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels 31-28 on Saturday night in Tallahassee. Florida State — a 13.5-poin underdog — had a shellacking in the work through two quarters, taking a stunning 31-7 lead into halftime.
The Seminoles had 241 rushing yards — and two touchdowns — on 36 carries, good for a 6.7 average. Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis only completed 8-of-19 passes for 191 yards (one touchdown, one interception), but ran 16 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
But in the second half, the Tar Heels scored 21 unanswered points, and were on the verge of game-tying field goal range on the final drive. However, the Tar Heels dropped three passes from star sophomore quarterback Sam Howell, with this brutal drop on 4th-and-9 in field goal range securing Florida State’s win.
So, even with zero points in the second half, Florida State pulled off the big upset. The Seminoles improve to 2-3 and 1-3 in ACC play, while the Tar Heels drop to 3-1 in each. It’s a huge victory for an FSU program that is rebuilding, and a pretty brutal loss for a UNC program with high hopes this season.
