A college baseball game ended on Friday with two absolutely terrible calls by the umpire.

Mississippi Valley State trailed 7-3 New Orleans heading into the bottom of the 9th inning. With two outs and facing a 1-1 count, winning the game was certainly in doubt. But that did not take away from these two absolutely awful strike zone calls from the umpire.

The batter, Davon Mims, had an animated response to the first awful called strike. Then the umpire rang him up on a ball down and away in the dirt, absurdly far away from anywhere close to the strike zone, and the game ended.

Video of the terrible calls went viral on Saturday morning.

It’s hard to fathom just how egregious these calls were. Eric Gregg may have even though those calls were terrible.

Reactions to the awful calls were about what you’d expect.

Wes Rucker called for the umpire to not work another game.

PitchingNinja said, “Right down the middle… of the opposite batter’s box.”

Andrew Mason sympathized with Mims for his reaction, called the umpire “unprofessional,” and said they shouldn’t work anywhere “beyond beer-league softball.”

The Rich Eisen Show joked that the pitch was “Juuuust a bit outside!”

Ben Collins praised the catcher for handling the situation so well.

Nick de la Torre called the moment “disgraceful.”
