While this weekend in college football wasn’t going to nearly live up with the non-stop excitement and unpredictability as last week, that didn’t mean that this week wouldn’t have something.
Down 27-24 to No. 22 ranked Oklahoma State, unranked Central Michigan had the ball on their own 49 yard line. With the clock at :00 and the benefit of an untimed down due to an Oklahoma State penalty. With no choice but to go for the win, quarterback Cooper Rush heaved the ball in the air and hoped for the best.
Rush’s pass was caught by Jesse Kroll at the 9 yard line and while that was great, Central Michigan didn’t have the touchdown. Kroll lateraled the ball to Corey Willis and he ran all the way to the other end of the field to earn those final nine yards and score the winning touchdown and get the upset over a ranked opponent.
It’s not everyday we see a successful hail mary combined with a hook-and-ladder to win a game. But when it happens, like today, it’s a thing of beauty.
UPDATE: It appears that while this was a great play, Central Michigan shouldn’t have gotten the untimed down and referees made a mistake. A MAC game official admitted that the wrong call was made and the game should have ended before the hail mary.
