Central Michigan head football coach Jim McElwain announced via Twitter on Monday night that he suffered a seizure on Sunday.
Doctors have asked McElwain “to stay in the hospital for a few days,” but he says that he’s “doing fine and all the tests have come back good.” He finished the tweet with, “I can’t wait to get camp started.”
McElwain, 60, took over as head coach of the Chippewas ahead of the 2019 season. Among the well-traveled coach’s jobs have been quarterbacks coach of the then-Oakland Raiders in 2006, offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coach at Alabama from 2008-11, head coach at Colorado State from 2012-14, head coach at Florida from 2015-17, and wide receivers coach at Michigan in 2018.
He’s done very well as a college football head coach, putting together a 64-40 combined record at Colorado State, Florida, and Central Michigan. He’s won a conference Coach of the Year award at all three schools: MWC Coach of the Year in 2014 (led Colorado State to a 10-2 record), SEC Coach of the Year in 2015 (led Florida to a 10-4 record), and MAC Coach of the Year in 2019 (led Central Michigan to an 8-6 record).
In 2021, McElwain led the MAC’s Central Michigan to a 9-4 record that was capped off with a Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl victory over the Pac-12’s Washington State. After the bowl victory, McElwain was doused with a bucket of Frosted Flakes.
Hopefully, McElwain will indeed be okay and get back to coaching Central Michigan very soon. The Chippewas open their season on the road at Oklahoma State on Sept. 1.
