‘Pistol’ Pete Marvich’s NCAA scoring record is in major jeopardy after Saturday afternoon’s proceedings in college basketball.
Detroit-Mercy Titans star Antoine Davis closed in on the record after another prolific performance on Saturday. Davis scored 42 points in Detroit-Mercy’s 89-77 win over IUPUI.
Davis now has 3,274 points in his illustrious college basketball career. Pistol Pete’s mark of 3,667 is just 393 points away now. Davis is averaging 27.0 points per game this season through 20 games played.
Hitting that average for the rest of the season would net him 297 more points. So Davis is going to need to shoot and score above that mark if he wants to keep chasing history. He already made history last Saturday as well, becoming the NCAA’s all-time leading 3-point shooter.
One man broke down the math if Davis wants to achieve history. Tony Paul of The Detroit News tweeted, “Detroit Mercy ha at least 12 games left. If only 12, Antoine Davis just average 32.75 points a game to reach Pistol Pete for No. 1 all-time in NCAA scoring. A Horizon League tournament run for the Titans, and Davis might get it done.”
So all eyes now will be on Antoine Davis while he chases history. Detroit-Mercy’s record will likely prevent the team from netting NCAA Tournament exposure. But even still, it’s certainly worth following. Probably won’t get any Aaron Judge-like cutaways, unfortunately.
