San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama made NBA history Wednesday night in San Antonio’s 130-108 win over the hapless Detroit Pistons.
Wembanyama became the youngest center in NBA history to record a triple-double, the first of his career, scoring 16 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists.
Wembanyama was also just the second player in NBA history to record a triple-double in less than 22 minutes, joining Russell Westbrook who accomplished the feat in 2014.
While San Antonio has struggled this season (Wednesday was just their sixth win of the year), Wembanyama has been as good as advertised. He is averaging 19.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game along with an NBA-leading 3.3 blocks per game in his rookie year. Wednesday was just the second game of the season in which the big man didn’t record a single block, although he likely is perfectly fine subbing in a triple-double instead.
Fans on social media had a lot to say about the impressive performance.
One fan called their shot, saying, “Victor is the future, Spurs gonna win championships with him and a few other pieces they draft”
Another fan agreed, saying, “He will be the most dominant player in the NBA in 3 years.”
Another praised the performance, saying, “Triple double in 21 minutes at 20 years old… this kid is special”
Wembanyama made sure to secure the game ball from his historic feat, as well.
