Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Larry David, Naomi Osaka and Steph Curry are just some of the famous names that have been served in the ongoing class action lawsuit against FTX, the now infamous cryptocurrency trading platform revealed to be a massive Ponzi scheme.
According to The Wall Street Journal, however, there is one big name that’s avoided service in the lawsuit at all costs: NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.
“In 30 years, I’ve never had to deal with this situation,” Adam Moskowitz, one of the lawyers representing the FTX investors, told WSJ. “We are not going away.”
O’Neal contends in court documents that the plaintiffs haven’t properly served him despite “months and multiple tries.” While the plaintiff’s lawyers contend O’Neal threw service papers out of his SUV window as he sped away, O’Neal says he simply “drove past the strangers lurking outside his home.”
O’Neal distanced himself from the disgraced platform in an interview with CNBC in December.
A lot of people think I’m involved, but I was just a paid spokesperson for a commercial,” he said.
The business of serving famous people can be tiring, monotonous work according to the Wall Street Journal article.
“They try to avoid the spotlight, but they can’t because they’re public figures,” Steve Polak, owner of Sunset Blvd. Investigations, told the outlet. “Eventually they’re going to come out, and they’re going to be at an event, and we’re going to be there, too.”
So far, Shaq seems to be the exception to this rule.
