The Brooklyn Nets traded All-Star guard Kyrie Irving on Sunday to the Dallas Mavericks, ending a huge but short-lived saga.
The Nets and Mavericks agreed to a trade that would send Irving to Dallas in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and multiple draft picks. The Athletic NBA insider Shams Charania reported details of the massive blockbuster trade.
“BREAKING: The Brooklyn Nets are trading Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round and multiple second-round picks,” Charania tweeted.
Details on the draft picks that were involved were later reported. “The Mavericks are sending a 2029 unprotected first-round pick a 2027 second-round pick and a 2029 second-round pick to the Nets,” Charania tweeted. He later noted that Markieff Morris will be sent to Dallas, as well.
The Mavs were among three teams who emerged as potential destinations for Irving. Dallas, the LA Lakers, and the Phoenix Suns all were named after his trade request earlier this week.
Kyrie most recently stated that he planned to sit out the season if he wasn’t traded by the February 9 deadline. Now, it’s clear that he will not have to do that. Luka Dončić will await Irving in the hopes of pushing the team to another NBA championship.
Kyrie obviously brings plenty of baggage along with him to Dallas due to his COVID-19 vaccine opinions and status as well as his sharing of an antisemitic movie last year.
