The Los Angeles Lakers have been a huge disappointment in the 2021-22 NBA season, and they hit a new low on Wednesday night.
The Lakers lost 107-105 to a Portland Trail Blazers team that has gutted its roster with trades in recent days, and Portland is also without star guard Damian Lillard due to injury.
Los Angeles entered this game as nine-point favorites, and they’re desperate for wins in order to hang in the Western Conference playoff race. The Lakers also had superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis healthy for this game, and they were without Russell Westbrook (back injury)- so nobody can blame him this time.
And still, they couldn’t find a way to beat a depleted and awful Portland team.
The Lakers will enter Thursday’s NBA trade deadline with a 26-30 record, ninth in the West.
Even Lakers legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson has had enough.
Johnson — a five-time NBA champion, three-time NBA MVP, and three-time NBA Finals MVP with the Lakers, to go with being the organization’s president of basketball operations from 2017-19 — tweeted after Wednesday’s loss that he’s “speechless.”
Magic added, “No words can describe how I’m feeling.”
You know things are bad when Magic Johnson — who’s usually a very optimistic Twitter personality, too — says that about his beloved Lakers.
But wait, it gets worse for the Lakers. Next up will be a road game against the Golden State Warriors (41-14) on Saturday, followed by hosting the Utah Jazz (34-21) next Wednesday.
