As the Dallas Mavericks are getting ready to defend their Western Conference championship, one of their best players is recovering from an injury.
The Mavericks announced that Kyrie Irving underwent surgery to repair a broken hand on Tuesday. The injury was sustained in the offseason.
NBA insider Marc Stein shared the team’s statement on X (formerly Twitter)
“The Dallas Mavericks announced today that Kyrie Irving has undergone surgery to repair a broken left hand,” the statement said. “He sustained the injury earlier this month while training. Further medical updates on Irving’s status will be provided as appropriate.”
Early signs are that the injury will not cost Irving any time.
“A team source expressed optimism that Kyrie Irving would recover in time to participate in training camp,” Tim MacMahon of ESPN reported.
Irving and backcourt mate Luka Dončić were the driving force for the Mavericks on their way to the NBA Finals. Irving averaged 25.6 points, along with 5.2 assists and five rebounds per game during the 2023-24 regular season. He then averaged 22.8 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game in the Western Conference playoffs in series wins over the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves and 19.8 points, five assists and three assists per game in the NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics.
