New York City sports are having a rough go of things at the moment. The Knicks dropped game 2 of their first-round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks, squandering home-court advantage for the rest of the series, and the Mets are in a major slump, having lost 11 straight games.
Curiously, the Mets’ winless streak started just after NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani hugged one of the club’s iconic mascots, Mrs. Met.
On Tuesday, Mamdani, a Mets fan himself, addressed the streak and his potential role in it during an address.
“I’ll first say that there’s a lot of baseball left to be played,” Mamdani said after being asked, and I am still keeping the faith, as I know that many Mets fans are across the city. Though I will accept being addressed as Mayor Mambino for the day.”
Mamdani was then asked if he had any plans to salvage the season.
“I will keep my fingers crossed, as every Mets fan does,” the Mayor responded.
The Mets are 8.5 games back of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East, but only five games out of a Wild Card berth. There’s plenty of time to get things turned around, but it doesn’t sound as if there’s much the Mayor can do for the ballclub, popular as he may be.
