The New York Yankees disappointed in a big way this season, missing out on the postseason with an 82-80 record on the year. Next season could be a make-or-break year for many members of their organization, which seems to have sparked their interest in making a big move this offseason.
The Yankees have a number of young talented players on their roster who made big impacts in 2023. Rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe hit 21 home runs in his rookie season. And rookie outfielder Jasson Dominguez showed out in his limited appearances down the stretch of the year.
While trading either one of them may be foolish for the Yankees, some other young players appear to be on the trade block. That is if the San Diego Padres are willing to part ways with star outfielder Juan Soto.
According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Yankees have already had one preliminary conversation this offseason about a potential trade for Soto.
This is a trade that Yankees fans have been asking for. So it is pretty safe to say that most of them are quite thrilled that these trade talks have begun.

The Padres had a disappointing season of their own this season, also missing out on the postseason despite a number of talented players on their roster.
However, Soto was excellent as always this year, hitting for a .275 batting average with a .410 on-base percentage while hitting 35 home runs.
The Padres would surely be asking for quite the haul in return for Soto. But if the Yankees are serious about competing next season, this could certainly be a move that makes a ton of sense for them.
