MLB world reacts to Yankees’ historic comeback

The New York Yankees appeared destined to see their three game losing streak come to an end in Thursday’s series finale against the Seattle Mariners. But instead, they pulled off a comeback unlike anything we have seen in over 40 years at the MLB level.

Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo was largely spectacular throughout his outing on Thursday night, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning with a 5-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the bottom of the eighth inning is where things started to unravel, which happened in a hurry. After allowing base hits to the first two batters in the inning, the Yankees would finally get a run across when Austin Wells hit a sac fly to bring in Jazz Chisholm Jr.

This would mark the end of Woo’s start. And the Mariners would proceed to blow the game in a way that is truly one of the worst displays from a bullpen all season long for any team.

The Yankees ended up bringing two more runs across in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Giancarlo Stanton home run. And then, in the bottom of the ninth inning, Austin Wells would bring two runners across on a single with the bases loaded to send the game to extra innings.

In extra innings, the Mariners almost seemed defeated before the game was even over. After being held scoreless in the top of the tenth inning, Mariners reliever Gabe Speier would load the bases, allowing Aaron Judge to complete the comeback on a sac-fly.

With the win, the Yankees became the first team since the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1977 to win a game after facing a five runs deficit with no hits entering the eighth inning.

Naturally, there were plenty of baseball fans who had plenty to say about this unbelievable comeback win.

At the end of the day, one game in the beginning of July wouldn’t seem to be all that important in the scope of a 182-game regular season.

However, this win does extend the Yankees winning streak to four straight games. And with only one more series to go until their reach the All-Star break, this win could perhaps send the Yankees into the break on a good note, which is certainly a positive as the Yankees look to close the gap of the Toronto Blue Jays’ narrow lead in the AL East.
