It may still be a while until we see Gerrit Cole on the mound. But on Wednesday, the New York Yankees offered a positive update on his status.
This season, the 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner hasn’t toed the rubber yet. He’s been ailed by elbow nerve inflammation. It’s taken him off the road and curtailed his progressions this year.
While the Yankees are off to a hot start, they surely miss their ace. MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch emerged with an update on Cole’s current status.
“Gerrit Cole had a ‘heavy day’ of throwing yesterday,” manager Aaron Boone told Hoch. Boone added “he doesn’t know when Cole is scheduled to throw from a mound.” The Yankee skipper also wouldn’t speculate on when he could return.
It’s good to hear that Cole is at least throwing. He’s dealt with some hiccups in that department over the last few weeks. But still, it doesn’t seem like he’s any closer to a return.
Cole has been one of the best pitchers in all of Major League Baseball throughout his career. 2023 marked the first time that Cole won the Cy Young award despite being a great pitcher in both the AL and the NL for a time. But until that elbow heals up, we won’t see the Yankee ace take the mound yet.
