Triple plays are a rare bird in Major League Baseball. Grand slams and perfect games might be rare but the triple play is something that usually only comes along a handful of times every year.

It’s May 18 and the Chicago White Sox are just 39 games into the 2016 season. As of tonight, they already have two triple plays on the year after turning their second one against the Houston Astros in a 5-3 win.

It’s also the first time the franchise has done it twice in a season since 2006.

Up 5-3 in the top of the eight, the Astros were threatening with runners on 1st and 2nd base. But then they hit into the good old-fashioned 5-4-3 and that was that.

That one wasn’t quite as impressive as their first triple play of the season. That one on April 22 ended up being the extremely-rare 9-3-2-6-2-5 play and it was a sight to behold.

So next time you see the White Sox opponent in threatening with at least two runners on base, make sure you tune in. If anyone is going to make a big play, it’s probably the White Sox.
