The weight is finally off their shoulders in Minnesota. The 2023 MLB Postseason started with a bang for the Minnesota Twins, who finally reentered the win column in the playoffs. Minnesota scored a 3-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays to take a 1-0 Wild Card series lead. But in doing so, the Twins made history.
Minnesota snapped the longest postseason losing streak in North American sports history. The last win the team recorded in the MLB playoffs was back on October 5, 2004. They defeated the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 2004 American League Division Series. Since then, though, it’s been nothing but woes. The Twins lost 18 games in a row in the playoffs going into Tuesday afternoon. Harshly enough, 15 of those came from the Yankees. The other three were from the Houston Astros in 2020.
The game concluded on a groundout by Toronto’s George Springer. Michael Kay delivered a boastful call after the game ended, saying, “Eighteen is enough!” in reference to the streak and to the TV show, ‘Eight is Enough.’
On the other end of the spectrum, the Jays have now allowed two teams to snap long postseason droughts. Last year, they lost to the Seattle Mariners, who hadn’t won a postseason game since 2001, as one user pointed out.
The Twins’ account adored the final moment when the game was put on ice.
The streak was so long, it went nearly 7,000 days! 6,937 to be precis, according to Twins Daily.
In all, it’s great to see the Twins win and see their fans celebrate. They had been mired for so long, and were on the receiving end of losses from practically one team! So, good for them for finally ending their woes. They’ll look to close things out on Wednesday.
