Just about everything is going the way of the St. Louis Cardinals these days.
On Wednesday night, it appeared that the Cardinals were headed to a surprising loss — as far as baseball losses go — to the MLB-worst Washington Nationals in St. Louis. But in the ninth inning, St. Louis did something that no other team in the majors has done this season.
Trailing 5-1, the Cardinals scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to take down the Nats 6-5 in wild walk-off fashion. Three of the runs came with two outs in the inning, and the final two runs scored on Tommy Edman’s game-winning double that went off the glove of Washington’s Alex Call in deep left field.
The Cardinals become the first team in the majors to overcome a deficit of four runs or more in the ninth inning this season. MLB teams were a combined 0-817 when trailing by four or more runs this season before St. Louis’ incredible comeback.
On Aug. 1, the Cardinals were three games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. Now, the surging Cardials (81-56) have a 9.5-game lead.
Wednesday night’s game summarizes the last several weeks of baseball for the Cardinals, and it summarizes how the entire season has gone for the Nats (48-89).
Here’s a look at how the baseball world is reacting to the Cardinals’ comeback:
