Shohei Ohtani continues to amaze MLB fans every time he takes the field. Whether at the plate or on the mound, Ohtani has astounded audiences around the globe. He might be the best baseball player in the world right now, and not a soul could argue against that viewpoint, especially not after Friday night when the Los Angeles Angels phenom dazzled again.
Shohei twirled a gem, allowing just two hits across seven innings of work and no earned runs. Ohtani struck out 11 batters and issued just two walks. But that’s not all: Ohtani’s opponent’s batting average after his stellar performance shrunk to a minuscule number: .092, according to Sarah Langs.
Ohtani made news as Langs tweeted an insane fact attached to that statistic: “That’s the lowest in a pitcher’s 1st 5 games pitched in a season, min 20 IP, since at least 1916!” Langs tweeted.
Langs added more detail after Elias Sports updated the statistic. “This is true since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893!” she exclaimed. According to Langs and Elias, David Cone, currently, an ESPN color commentator, held the previous record at .102.
That’s such an insane and startling fact. Shohei Ohtani is doing something that nobody has done since the late 19th century! Every time you think he can amaze you, he finds a way to take it a galaxy further.
