This week’s Sunday Night Baseball saw some serious late drama, with Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman Rhys Hoskins hitting what appeared to be a two-out, game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth against New York Mets’ pitcher Edwin Diaz. However, that call was later reversed to a ground-rule double, and Jeurys Familia then struck out Bryce Harper to end the game with a 8-7 Mets’ win. Here’s Hoskins’ hit (which he’s seen celebrating above before the reversal), which play-by-play announcer Matt Vasgersian initially called with “And it’s gone!”
The rationale for overturning the home run was the ball coming off the railing rather than off of a seat. And further replay did seem to suggest that was the case. But it was certainly a tough blow for the Phillies, and one that led to them only getting within one run rather than tying the game.
