While Reid Detmers wasn’t exactly a household name before Tuesday night, he’s going to be a lot more famous now.
The Los Angeles Angels lefty, who had 42.2 innings in his MLB career and a career 6.33 ERA entering Tuesday, threw a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The MLB world heaped a lot of well deserved praise on Detmers following this gem.
This was the second no-hitter of the season but the first of its kind. In 2022’s previous no-hitter, five different New York Mets pitchers combined to no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies. Detmers had the first solo no-hitter of the season.
While the solo no-hitter is the more conventional version, Detmers’ effort was anything but, especially in the modern fame. Baseball games in 2022 tend to feature an abundance of strikeouts, Detmers struck out only two Tampa hitters. That’s the fewest number of strikeouts in a no-hitter in more than a decade.
By contrast, while the Angels won the game 12-0, their hitters struck out six times.
Pitching to contact did enable Detmers to keep his pitch count down. He threw 108 pitches on the day, walking only one hitter.
How this no-hitter compares to others that have been thrown throughout history is up to the individual beholder. But this one will stand out.
