A hilarious moment came from Sunday’s game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees when Rays outfielder Jose Siri came up to bat for the first time in the top of the second inning.
The Rays broadcast team announced that he was coming up to bat in a normal fashion, but this triggered someone’s iPhone to use the “Ask Siri” prompt that is on nearly every iPhone.
The moment was caught through the broadcast, with the iPhone reading “I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that. Can you say that again?” as the iPhone responded to the word Siri.
Many around the MLB world saw this as an extremely hilarious mishap from the Rays broadcast booth.
This was not just an issue with the Rays broadcast team, as longtime Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay discussed this situation as well, informing fans at home that Jose Siri’s at-bats will trigger viewers’ iPhone’s at home.
““Now if I could make a friendly suggestion to all of our great viewers,” Kay said during Siri’s at-bat. “Throughout this series, keep your iPhone away from the TV, cause every time I say ‘Siri,’ it’s gonna kick in.”
It is certainly an understandable mistake considering the Rays just traded for Siri earlier this month at the MLB trade deadline.
He is only in his third season in the MLB, but hopefully, this moment is a reminder to broadcast team’s across the MLB to keep their phones far away when Siri comes up to bat in the future.
