The Oakland A’s are on the move—not to Las Vegas yet, but the 2024 season will be their last in Oaktown. Owner John Fisher has received significant criticism over the handling of the move, and so has Commissioner Rob Manfred.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, criticism over the move and the handling of the move doesn’t just come from the corners of rightfully jilted fans or informed pundits. The criticism also lies around the league.
“Within other organizations, there is a lot of disgust with how the A’s have handled the ballpark situation,” Olney wrote on X. “Especially when there’s an actual ballpark plan settled in Las Vegas. And there is an assumption the A’s will tank in the next few years, because their revenue stream will be down to a trickle. ‘This makes us all look bad,’ said one person”
Of course, while executives and potentially owners around the league may find disgust in this situation now, it’s true they could have avoided it in the first place. They unanimously approved the move. Nobody objected or intervened. So it’s tough to find sympathy.
