Remembering the number of outs is one of the most important things for a baseball player of any age to remember during a game. Unfortunately, a minor league baseball player for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos recently failed to do that, and it cost his team a run in the most embarrassing way possible.
During the bottom of the second inning of Friday night’s game against the Tennessee Smokies, a Smokies hitter sent a deep fly ball into left field with runners on first and second base with one out. The Pensacola left fielder got under it very easily and made the catch for the second out of the inning. But unfortunately, he thought it was the final out of the inning and he tossed the ball over the fence to the fans in the stands.
The left fielder immediately realized his mistake, but the damage was done. As a result of his mental lapse, the Smokies were awarded a run, giving them a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
It was quite an embarrassing blunder, but it ultimately didn’t cost the Blue Wahoos all that much. Pensacola ultimately still won the game 12-7 thanks to a 7-run sixth inning.
