The New York Mets have not had the season that many were expecting thus far, entering Friday’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 30-33 record on the year. Their struggles continued in Pittsburgh, highlighted by a truly laughable error that can be seen at your local Little League field.
Mets starting pitcher Tylor Megill, like many of the Mets starters this season, struggled heavily. He failed to make it out of the fourth inning, and perhaps his worst inning came in the third inning.
Megill loaded the bases in the inning, and Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes came through with a 2 RBI single.
The Mets poor defense then further added to the terrible inning. Pirates second baseman Ji-hwan Bae laid down a bunt, which was fielded by Mets third baseman Eduardo Escobar. Escobar then proceeded to airmail first baseman Mark Canha with his throw, which went into the outfield. This led to two runners scoring on the play and Bae getting to third base.
The Pirates scored another run in the inning after Megill allowed another single on the next at-bat.
Many around the MLB world took to social media to blast the Mets for the brutal inning.
Things would only get worse in the game for the Mets, who lost 14-7, scoring five garbage time runs in the ninth inning to make it that close.
SNY play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen spoke his mind about the team’s struggles, saying “Well I don’t know what rock bottom feels like, but this seems like it’s awfully close.”
This came only one day after the Mets blew a four-run lead against the Atlanta Braves, which resulted in a brutal and baffling series sweep.
Perhaps the most concerning thing about the Mets’ struggles is the lack of accountability from manager Buck Showalter, who seems to not understand how serious the struggles have been.
It doesn’t help matters that the team will be without star first baseman Pete Alonso, who is expected to be out for the next 3-4 weeks with a wrist injury.
