After weeks of guessing whether the New York Mets would really trade ace Max Scherzer, the guessing game is over.
The New York Post‘s Jon Heyman reported Saturday afternoon that the Mets have reached an agreement with the Texas Rangers on a trade for the three-time Cy Young Award winner.
However, the trade is still pending on Scherzer’s approval.
Scherzer made it clear Friday night that he was not happy with the team’s direction, after the Mets traded closer David Robertson to the Miami Marlins on Thursday.
Scherzer told reporters, “Probably got to have a conversation with the front office. You traded our closer away. A bunch of people are going to have to have conversations with the front office.”
Scherzer’s status with the Mets has been all over the board in the past month, with reports ranging from the team had “no plans” to trade him, to “unlikely to trade him” to news in recent days that the team was “open” to a trade.
The 39-year-old right-hander holds a 9-4 record with a 4.01 ERA (4.73 FIP) and a 1.189 WHIP this season.
The baseball world met the news with mixed feelings.
