Max Scherzer struggled mightily Friday night and New York Mets fans let the veteran know they were not happy.
Mets fans loudly booed the three-time Cy Young Award winner after he gave up his fourth home run of the night, to San Diego Padres slugger Manny Machado, in the fifth inning. Manager Buck Showalter immediately lifted Scherzer, and the boos rained down on Scherzer at Citi Field as he exited the NL Wild Card series opener.
Scherzer’s line (4 2/3 innings, seven hits, seven earned runs, four home runs) is horrendous. It’s even worse considering it comes on the heels of another bad outing. Scherzer got hit hard on Oct. 1, giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves swept that series to essentially clinch the NL East.
Many Mets fans were already feeling uneasy about Scherzer, who spent time on the IL in September with an injured left oblique. Whatever the reason for Scherzer’s tough outing Friday night, Mets fans shared their anger at Citi Field and on social media.
This is going to be unpopular but…you bought Max Scherzer for THIS game. The Mets don't win 101 without him but they 100% make the playoffs without him. They're in the same position without him.

Scherzer went 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA this season, so it’s not like age has finally caught up with the 38-year-old pitcher. The Mets will now need a strong outing from Jacob deGrom Saturday.
