The New York Mets were expected to be one of the top teams in baseball. That has not been the case early on this season, which led to manager Buck Showalter getting brutally honest about the team’s struggles.

New York dropped the series finale on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies, a team with a losing record.

This loss puts the Mets under .500, which seemed to spark Showalter to send a clear message to his team.

Showalter was asked after the game about the team’s struggles, where he frankly explained that the team needs to be better.

“Play better,” said Showalter on how his team snaps out of their cold streak. “Nobody wants to hear it. There are plenty of things to grab on to. I understand everyone’s job is pointing to reasons why they perceive it. Just play better, we control it, it’s not like there’s some outside element. Just play better.”

It’s easy to say that the team needs to just “play better.” But Mets fans certainly were hoping for a more passionate message from him.

Like Showalter stated, there are certainly things that Mets fans can point to that explain these struggles. This includes injuries to key players such as star pitcher Justin Verlander and the suspension of Max Scherzer.

Regardless, things just clearly aren’t jelling on this Mets roster at the moment. They will have their chance to get back on track Tuesday night against the Cincinnati Reds.
