It’s easy for anyone to see that this season is not exactly going the way the New York Mets had hoped. The team is currently eight games shy of a .500 record and 17 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East division race. The Mets expected to be legitimate contenders this season, but instead, there’s now a real discussion about potentially trading away an ace pitcher – and we aren’t even at the All-Star break yet.
This week, New York Mets ace Max Scherzer fielded a question about the possibility of being traded. The Mets starter was asked if he would consider waiving his no-trade clause to allow the team to deal him to another team before the trade deadline.
While Scherzer didn’t exactly rule it out, he also made it clear that he’s not going to be the one to initiate those conversations – that would be on New York Mets team owner Steve Cohen.
“It’s pointless to even talk about it,” Scherzer said according to SNY. “Go ask Steve. If Steve says it’s so, then let’s talk about it. Until then, it’s pointless to even talk about or think about.”
It’s pretty brutal news for the Mets that this is even a discussion in June in the first place, and the MLB world had plenty to say about it.
As for Cohen’s thoughts on the situation, he said he didn’t want to “even broach that topic” of trading either Scherzer or Justin Verlander.
