Sandy Alcántara will miss the entire 2024 MLB season after undergoing Tommy John surgery Friday.
The Miami Marlins star announced the surgery in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“With a heavy heart, I want to let everyone know I had ‘Tommy John’ surgery today and will miss next season,” Alcántara posted. “I am most saddened for the great Marlins fans, who were so supportive of me and the team this year.
“I give this game my all, I give this city my all, and so I promise I will not take a day off as I push to be back better than ever. … I will miss pitching, but I plan to be around the team as much as possible.”
The 28-year-old right-hander has not pitched since Sept. 3. The Marlins originally placed him on the IL with a strained flexor in his right forearm, but later testing revealed a sprained ulnar collateral ligament.
It’s a huge blow for the team heading into next season. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner took a step back this year, with a 4.14 ERA and 1.213 WHIP. Analytics showed his changeup wasn’t as effective this season, but Marlins catcher Jacob Stallings told the Sporting News in July he had pitched much better than the results indicated.
Marlins fans quickly reacted to the news about the popular player.
That’s rough, but it is the best decision for your future. You will recover quickly and come back stronger. — Gideon 6ix
