The Miami Marlins walked off the San Francisco Giants with a 7-6 victory in the 10th inning on Saturday. It looked like the Marlins were in big trouble in both the top and bottom of the 10th, but they made big plays on defense and offense to come away victorious.
In the top of the 10th, the Giants had a 6-5 lead and appeared to be adding another run or two to their lead. With runners on second and third and two outs, San Francisco’s Mauricio Dubón who hit a groundball up the middle, and Miami shortstop Jazz Chisholm made a nice play to get to the ball. Well, Chisholm’s throw to first base was in the dirt, but first baseman Jesús Aguilar made an incredible play to snag the ball with his hand after being unable to field it cleanly with the glove.
Amazing reflexes here from the big first baseman:
So, that kept the Marlins within one run. They remained within one run with runners on first and second, and two outs. That’s when Jorge Alfaro smoked a two-run double for the win:
Things didn’t look good for the Marlins entering the bottom of the ninth either, trailing 5-3. But Alfaro came through in the clutch in the ninth as well, ripping an RBI single to make it a 5-4 game:
And then Starling Marte hit a two-out RBI single to tie it up:
Chisholm was fantastic in this game, reaching base five times. The 23-year-old is already playing like a star in his second season, currently ranking fifth among MLB position players in wins above replacement (WAR) per FanGraphs.
Oh, and the Giants have to be kicking themselves for letting this one get away.
