The Seattle Mariners find themselves squarely in the mix for a wild card position in the American League. And based on how active the team has been at the trade deadline, they have very clearly decided to go all-in this season on making a push for the postseason.
Earlier this month, the Mariners traded with the Arizona Diamondbacks for former All-Star first baseman Josh Naylor, who is in the midst of another excellent season in 2025. And they weren’t done adding to the offense, as they pulled off an even bigger trade on Wednesday night.
According to MLB reporter Mark Feinsand, the Mariners made arguably the biggest move around baseball at the deadline thus far, adding All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez.
Suarez is in the midst of his best season to date in 2025, hitting 36 home runs thus far this season, which is tied for fifth for the most home runs in baseball to this point. This actually sets the record for the player with the most home runs to be traded in a midseason deal, a record that was previously held by Mark McGwire in 1997.
Any time you can add a player who is in the top five in home runs, it goes without saying that it is a quality move for the Mariners. So it will certainly be interesting to see how much this helps the Mariners as they attempt to stay in a Wild Card spot, or potentially even try and catch the Houston Astros in the American League West division.
