San Diego Padres slugger Manny Machado has excelled despite a downtrodden season, but some unfortunate news has emerged. The All-Star third baseman may need surgery to repair his elbow.
Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the Padres could shut Machado down due to his “tennis elbow” injury. Acee reported that he has considered surgery in the offseason to resolve the issue that’s lingered over the last two years.
MLB Trade Rumors wrote, “It is possible Machado might be shut down to due to recurring elbow problems, specifically the type of inflammation best known as ‘tennis elbow.’ This is the second straight season that Machado has dealt with the injury, and he could top for an offseason surgery that shouldn’t impact his readiness for the start of Spring Training.”
This particular issue has nagged at him enough that it’s led him to believe surgery is the best option. It’s a frustrating roadblock for Manny, but not one that seems like it will affect his status for the 2024 MLB season. 2024 will hopefully bring better tidings to both Machado and the Padres. San Diego spent a lot of money in the offseason to try and get better. The Padres, however, did not see those dividends get paid off. They are a dismal 67-75 and 20.0 games back of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers.
