Luis Arráez’s latest achievement puts him in Hall of Fame group

After going hitless in three straight games, Miami Marlins second baseman Luis Arráez seems to have found his swing again. And it’s put him in some legendary company.

Arráez broke out of his slump on Friday, going 5-for-5. He followed that up with a 1-for-4 day on Saturday. Then, after sitting out on Sunday, Arráez was back at it on Monday. The Miami keystone went 5-for-5. That did two things.

One, the three-game hitless streak dropped Arráez’s batting average to .378, seemingly pouring cold water on his quest for .400. Now, it’s back on. Going 11-for-14 over the last three games moved Arráez’s average up to an even .400.

Two, it was Arráez’s third five-hit game of the month. He’s the fourth player in MLB history to have three such games in a month. The others? George Sisler (1921), Ty Cobb (1922) and Dave Winfield (1984).

After Monday, the Marlins still have 10 more games remaining in June. So, even with his small slump, Arráez has been efficient.

Without exaggeration, Arráez is in a group that includes those are three of the greatest hitters and players in the history of the sport. Cobb was in baseball’s first Hall of Fame Class, Winfield was a first-ballot Hall of Famer while Sisler had to “wait” until his fourth year of eligibility.

Crazy stats can be accrued over a short period of time in baseball. But when an active player achieves something that has only been done by legends, it’s worth noticing.

And that’s exactly what Arráez has done.
