Liam Hendriks is making good progress in his treatment during his battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, according to Chicago White Sox general manager Rick Hahn.
Since there isn’t a specific timeline for when Hendriks should return, he hasn’t been placed on the 60-day injury list.
Hahn explained that on Wednesday.
“And that is on purpose,” Hahn said to assembled media, H/T MLB.com. “Hopefully at some point in April, toward the end of April, I’ll be able to get a little bit more specific for a potential timeline for his return. “I know that right now he’s making progress. Liam is very appreciative of the well wishes and respecting his privacy as he continues to fight his way back to the big leagues.”
Hendriks announced on January 8, he had cancer.
“Hearing the word ‘Cancer,’ came as a shock to my wife and I, as it does to millions of families each year, however I am resolved to embrace the fight and overcome this new challenge with the same determination I have used when facing over obstacles in my life,” Hendriks wrote on Instagram after his announcement.
He began treatment shortly thereafter.
Hendriks, and his wife, Kristi, received an outpouring of love after his diagnosis was made public.
“I know that right now he’s making progress,” Hahn added. “Liam is very appreciative of the well wishes and respecting his privacy as he continues to fight his way back to the big leagues.”
The three-time All-Star and two-time Mariano Rivera AL Reliever of the Year Award has a collective 2.26 ERA over the last three seasons (2019-22). Across his entire 12-year career, he boasts a 3.41 ERA with 724 strikeouts in 645 innings. Good enough for a 1.20 WHIP.
