After New York Yankees’ third baseman Josh Donaldson apologized for his racially insensitive comments towards Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson by referring to him as “Jackie,” he now says he is hurt that the Yankees didn’t defend him more.
“This is just my opinion — (that’s) somewhere he should not be going,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone after the incident.
“I just don’t think it’s the right thing to do there,” said New York star Aaron Judge.
Donaldson thought that his current club should have shown more support.
“I think that was tough to hear, for sure, just for the simple fact that I pride myself on being a good teammate, and everywhere I’ve went, every organization that I’ve been a part of, minus Oakland, has offered me extensions, has wanted me to stay back,” said Donaldson, who was suspended for one game over the incident. “I think part of winning is having good team chemistry, and I’ve taken pride everywhere I’ve went I’ve always tried to help people try to get better.”
Another loud critic of Donaldson is former teammate, White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks who says he is not a fan of Donaldson.
For his part, Donaldson said he didn’t realize the pair had issues with each other.
“I know Liam has come out a couple of times and said some stuff about me,” Donaldson said. “It’s weird because I hear one thing and then when I see him it’s different. So it’s definitely been confusing for that. I’m not saying that every one of my teammates have always been best friends with.”
Donaldson still maintains that he and Anderson just had a misunderstanding, though Anderson has made it clear he was never much of a fan of Donaldson to begin with.
