Cincinnati Reds star first baseman Joey Votto got some bad news earlier this week, as the former MVP announced on Wednesday that he will undergo surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder this Friday. The surgery will end his 2022 season.
Despite the disappointing injury, Votto appears to be keeping his spirits light. The Reds star is even cracking jokes.
After his surgery on Friday, Votto shared a message on Twitter joking that he was blissfully unaware of his injury.
“I didn’t know I was hurt,” Votto Tweeted. “Thought I just stunk.”
Votto’s message is consistent with what he told reporters on Wednesday when he announced his surgery. The Reds star explained that he’s been dealing with this injury since the 2015 season.
Votto went on to explain that the injury stems from all the way back in 2015.
“I’ve been able to play through it (since 2015),” Votto explained. “Only the past maybe three, four months or so has it been painful to the point where it’s … without getting into specifics, difficult to lift, hurts to sleep.”
Votto’s recovery time is about six months, and he hopes to be ready to play again by spring training. Hopefully for the Reds, their star will stink a little bit less after the surgery.
