The New York Mets have spent most of the 2022 MLB season in first place in the National League East, even garnering a 10.5-game lead in June. However, due to injuries and sluggish play, the Atlanta Braves caught up to them this week and now the two teams are locked in a back-and-forth battle for the division. There are plenty of reasons to wonder how the Mets squandered their lead but longtime fan Jerry Seinfeld thinks the answer is obvious and lays the blame at the feet of Timmy Trumpet.
The SNY Instagram account posted a graphic that explained the current predicament on Tuesday night. The caption read, “The Braves defeated the Athletics late last night in Oakland. Today, for the first time since April 11, the Mets do not have sole possession of first place in the NL East.”
Seinfeld, who is arguably the most famous Mets fan in the world, commented on the post, saying “I blame that stupid Trumpet performance. Celebrating in season. We haven’t won anything yet. Bad mojo.”
Not content to leave it at that, the comedian then added a follow-up comment, saying “Same as when Baja Men showed up to play ‘Who Let Dogs Out’ in 2000 WS,” he added. “Series ended right there.”
