The Houston Astros front office went through a shakeup Friday. Houston parted ways with General Manager James Click and Assistant GM Scott Powers. ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan reported the news of Click and Powers’ exits from the Astros organization.
“World Series-winning general manager James Click will not return to the Houston Astros,” Passan wrote. Click rejected the one-year contract offer the team gave him. USA TODAY would then add to the report Friday afternoon.
The USA TODAY Sports Twitter wrote, “James Click was offended by the Astros’ contract extension and departed Monday night for the annual GM Meetings in Las Vegas without a deal.”
The team also fired Powers, who worked for the team this year after working with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Passan also reported the news of Powers’ dismissal from the Astros.
Passan wrote in a tweet, “The Houston Astros also fired assistant general manager Scott Powers.”
The added details on Click’s firing revealed a lot. Especially about Click’s relationship with team owner Jim Crane. Crane reportedly never wanted to bring Click back in the first place, according to Nightengale’s report. Others around him had to reportedly persuade him. The two sides met and Crane offered a contract that was similar to the one the team offered manager Dusty Baker. But Click grew offended.
“Crane consented, but insisted it would be only for one year, the same length as manager Dusty Baker’s deal, and a raise from his $1 million salary. Click was deeply offended, considering GMs usually receive multi-year extensions after successful seasons,” wrote Nightengale.
The MLB world reacted to the news of the Astros’ front office shakeup. There was a lot of skepticism and there were a lot of questions.

not the least bit shocking he declined. You can't offer a first-time GM who takes on the job under such unprecedented conditions and wins the World Series 2 years later just a 1-year deal. That's an insult, not a reward. https://t.co/iKbJck50KR
