Tuesday night’s game between the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks at Oracle Park perfectly summarized how 2021 is going for each team. The Giants have been baseball’s biggest surprise, entering Tuesday with the NL’s best record at 41-25. The Diamondbacks have been a complete disaster, entering Tuesday with MLB’s worst record (20-47) and an 11-game losing streak.
Well, Arizona actually got off to a fantastic start, taking a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning, and an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. And still, they lost.
Trailing 8-5 with a 1-2 count and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Mike Yastrzemski cranked a grand slam down the right field line to give the Giants a 9-8 lead. That would serve as the final score.
If the D-Backs hit that flyball, it’s probably going foul. But that’s the way things are going for these teams.
Arizona’s losing streak extends to 12 games, and they’ve lost 21 straight games on the road. They’re a stunningly brutal 5-35 over their last 40 games. Yikes.
The Giants, on the other hand, improve to 42-25 and have a 1.5-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
