Jorge Soler, who won the World Series MVP with the Atlanta Braves in 2021, has found a new home in the National League East.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that Soler has agreed to a contract with the Miami Marlins. Feinsand also reported the terms of the deal.
Soler hit .223/.316/.432 during the 2021 season. But for all intents and purposes, that season should be counted as two different seasons. Soler’s production Kansas City Royals didn’t mirror what he did with the Braves in any way.
With Kansas City, he struggled. Soler did hit a respectable 13 home runs in 94 games, but struggled with a .192/.288/.370 slash line. The trade to Atlanta sparked Soler. He hit 14 home runs in only 55 games and had a much better slash line, at .269/.358/.524. In the World Series win over the Houston Astros, Soler hit .300/.391/.800 with three home runs.
Soler’s power should be a boon to Miami’s offense, which struggled mightily in 2021. During the 2021 season, the Marlins ranked 28th in all of MLB with 158 home runs and 29th in slugging percentage at .372.
With Miami’s uncertain situations in the outfield, at first base and now at the designated hitter roles, Soler shouldn’t have trouble finding a place to play.
The Marlins still have some work to do to compete in what figures to be a highly-competitive National League East. But the signing of Soler is a step towards making that happen.
