Baseball saluted the new World Series champion Texas Rangers Wednesday night, and while the team’s fans were ecstatic, another MLB fanbase had some very complicated emotions.
New York Mets fans watched as former Mets pitchers Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer won World Series rings with the Rangers. Neither played a role in the postseason success; deGrom missed all but six games in 2023 with a torn UCL, while Scherzer had a 6.52 ERA in three postseason appearances.
Yet they both now have their first series rings. Baseball fans and Mets faithful couldn’t stop talking after the series about how the pair of former Cy Young Award winners were supposed to bring that WS trophy home to New York.
deGrom pitched his first nine seasons with the Mets before joining the Rangers in the offseason.
Scherzer, who signed a record two-year, $87 million contract with the Mets before the 2022 season, got moved at the trade deadline this year as the team went down in flames. Afterward, Scherzer revealed he was unhappy with the team’s future plans.
So for long-suffering Mets fans, watching deGrom and Scherzer win the World Series was tough to handle, but they tried to express their pain on X/Twitter. Of course, Mets-haters on X/Twitter were loving every minute of their pain.
