A day after he was caught on camera saying disparaging things about the city, fans of the Philadelphia Phillies showed Alec Bohm the true meaning of “The city of brotherly love.”
Bohm had a disastrous game on Monday in the field. When he was booed following his third error of the game, he was caught on camera saying “I f*cking hate this place.” Following the game, Bohm acknowledged saying that, said it was a heat of the moment comment and not his true feelings and most importantly — apologized.
Bohm didn’t start in Tuesday’s game against the New York Mets but was called on to pinch-hit. When he was introduced, Bohm was met with a tremendous ovation.
What’s the lesson here?
It would have been understandable for Bohm to get booed at least once in the immediate aftermath of his comments. But rather than deny his comments or try to justify them, he apologized the first chance he got. It’s a lesson that Cincinnati Reds president Phil Castellini should have taken. Had he, his apology might have been better received.
Philadelphia is known as one of the toughest sports towns in the world. But even tough fans are willing to forgive someone who seeks forgiveness. Bohm did just that. And both he and Phillies fans seem to be a lot happier for it.
