Dusty Baker couldn’t stay away from the game long.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the former major league manager was hired by the San Francisco Giants as a special assistant to president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi.
Nightengale added his additional duties will be assisting owner Larry Baer.
Baker hinted in December he could return to the game after some preliminary talks with the Giants organization.
“They’re just preliminary talks,” Baker said in December on 95.7 The Game’s Steiny and Guru. “Like I said, I’ve talked to Larry [Baer] and I’m waiting to talk to Farhan [Zaidi]. You know they do have a team here in Sacramento where I am here. The River Cats — not sure if they’re still the River Cats, but you know, we’ll see we can work things out family-wise and time-wise, all kind of ways so like I said, it’s just — we’re just having preliminary talks. We’ll see how things work out.”
Baker retired from managing after the 2023 season, ending an illustrious career at that position across five teams and 26 seasons. He earned three National League Manager of the Year Awards and won 10 division titles.
His most recent stint with the Houston Astros had him winning a World Series championship in 2022.
He also managed the San Francisco Giants for 10 years from 1993-2002.
