On Tuesday night, Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell was ejected from the team’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers for arguing with home plate umpire Carlos Torres over some controversial ball and strike calls. Bell got extremely heated during the confrontation, but it looks like he might have had a point.
As highlighted by the Twitter account Umpire Scorecards, which rates each home plate umpire’s performance after every Major League Baseball game, Carlos Torres had a rough performance behind home plate on Tuesday night.
According to Umpire Scorecards, Torres was just 90 percent accurate and 90 percent consistent during Tuesday night’s game, which is well below the league average in both categories and 3.6% below what would be expected in terms of accuracy. He also called just 77% of called strikes correctly, compared to the league average of 88%.
As a result of his poor performance, Umpire Scorecards estimates that the Los Angeles Dodgers benefitted about 0.25 runs in the game, which would help explain why Bell was so angry during the game.
It was an absolutely brutal performance from the umpire, and the major league baseball world had plenty to say about it on social media.
It’s safe to say that it just wasn’t Torres’ night. But even though the calls adversely affected the Reds, Cincinnati was able to pull off the comeback victory in the game.
