Less than 24 hours after his reported deal with the San Francisco Giants was put on hold due to some medical concerns in his physical, free agent shortstop Carlos Correa has reportedly signed with the New York Mets.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post shed some light on the matter, minutes after the deal with New York was reported. He confirmed that the Giants were concerned about a medical issue with Correa. With that, Correa’s agent, Scott Boras, continued to negotiate with the Mets — who were interested in Correa throughout the offseason. Heyman also got a quote from Mets owner, Steve Cohen.
“Correa’s camp and the Giants had a difference of opinion on the medical, and agent Scott Boras worked out a deal with Steve Cohen.” Heyman reported on Twitter. “‘We needed one more thing. And this was it,’ Cohen said.”
The Mets finished the 2022 season in a disappointing way but were one of the best teams in baseball throughout the year, winning 101 games.
Even before the deal with the Giants fell through, health has been something of a question mark for Correa. He’s only exceeded 150 games in a season once in his career and only topped 140 on one other occasion. He is, however, one of the best players in the league when healthy. In 2022, Correa hit .291/.366/.467 for the Minnesota Twins. He also plays good defense and is only a season removed from a Gold Glove.
Cohen has spent a lot of money to improve the Mets roster since he took over — and particularly this offseason. So, it’s not surprising that he continued to persist on Correa, even before the deal became official. And it’s also not surprising that Correa’s past injury issues were not a deterrent for Cohen and the Mets.
