We do love good diving catches around these parts, and the latest notable one comes from St. Louis Cardinals’ outfielder Justin Williams. Playing right field at home against the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, Williams (seen above high-fiving teammate Matt Carpenter during an April 13 game) went an awfully long way to prevent a Rhys Hoskins hit in the top of the third:
Williams, 25, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks out of high school in the second round of the 2013 draft, but made his MLB debut in July 2018 for the Tampa Bay Rays. After just 10 days on their active roster, he was traded to St. Louis in the Tommy Pham deal, and he wound up in the minors with the Cardinals until September 2020. But he made the team out of spring training this year, and while his hitting numbers so far (.190/.299/.293 through 23 MLB games) leave much to be desired, he has shown some impressive defensive abilities at times. And this was certainly a highlight-reel moment for him.
