The Milwaukee Brewers made a minor-league signing that got some major attention. Milwaukee inked a deal with former New York Yankees slugger Luke Voit.
Voit, who led the American League in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, joins the Brewers after a stint with the San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals last season. Voit was involved in the massive Juan Soto trade that sent the All-Star outfielder to the loaded Padres. Voit’s stint with the Nats didn’t last long obviously.
Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reported the news. McCalvy tweeted, “The Brewers signed 1B Luke Voit to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league camp. Voit, 32, played 53 games for the Nationals last season. He hit 20+ homers each of the three seasons before that.”
Voit has mashed 95 career home runs in 486 career games. Voit began his career in the NL Central with the St. Louis Cardinals. So, a move to the Milwaukee Brewers comes with a strong sense of familiarity at least. He spent two seasons with the Cardinals before they dealt him to New York in exchange for Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos.
Voit spent four seasons with the Yankees. He clubbed 14, 21, 22, and 11 home runs in his four full seasons with the team. Last year, with the Padres, he hit 13 home runs and then nine with the Nats to finish with 22. He has a career OPS of .818.
One would figure Voit would get some designated hitter looks for the Brewers if he eventually makes it back up to the Major League level.
